As a result of the evolving COVID-19 virus, and out of concern for the health and safety of our clients, our staff, and our families, we are adopting the following COVID-19 protocols:

 

Electronic Document Transmission

We are encouraging clients to send us their tax paperwork in electronic format via the Client Vault (Sharefile).  Click here to access your personalized Sharefile account: https://ryanlamontagne.sharefile.com/Authentication/Login

Paper Document Drop-box

To facilitate the delivery of paper documents, we have once again installed a drop-box which is located at the front entrance to the building.  The drop-box is clearly labelled.  It is emptied twice-daily Monday to Friday.  Please ensure you place all your tax paperwork into a single envelope that is properly sealed and clearly labelled.  We do not advise that you drop off any documents after hours or on weekends.

 

Confirmation of Receipt of Tax Information

We will confirm either by telephone or by email that we have received your tax documents within 24 hours of delivery.

 

Completed Tax Returns

We will upload the completed tax returns to you electronically using the Client Vault (Sharefile).  Upon request, we can also email you a copy of your tax return in PDF format.  Original tax documents will be returned to clients during the month of May.

 

Filing Deadlines

The 2020 personal tax return filing deadline is April 30th, 2021.

Self-employed individuals and their spouses have until June 15th, 2021, though any amount owing for the taxation year must be paid by April 30th.

 

Home Office Expense Deduction

Employees who worked from home more than 50% of the time over a period of a least four consecutive weeks in 2020 due to COVID-19 will now be eligible to claim the home office expenses deduction for 2020.  See here for more details: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/news/2020/12/simplifying-the-process-for-claiming-a-deduction-for-home-office-expenses-for-employees-working-from-home-due-to-covid-19.htm

 

Did You Sell Your Home in 2020?

You now need to report the sale of your principal residence.

 

Foreign Income Verification Statement

All taxpayers must provide detailed reporting on their foreign investments.  Please ensure that you disclose all information related to your foreign assets so that we can prepare form T1135.
